I often find connections between languages. For instance “Active" and "Activo” mean the same thing in english and spanish, sound very similar, and (most importantly for me) look alike visually. In my work I play with the concept of cognate images. My work points out the abstract nature of figures and the figuration of abstraction.Certain combinations of shapes (which resemble structures in the visible world) cause my imagination to see "things" beyond shape. i.e a figure or structure. I first noticed this as a child when looking at clouds. That fascination has stayed with me and plays a central role in my work.
I combine figurative and abstract images to point out the mystery of every day life. My imagery is polysemantic at its essence. Meaning, in my work, is a by-product of the viewers own imagination and experience.
